Croatian Art Therapy Association was founded in 2018. by 6 students of the first Postgraduate Art Therapy Program in Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek, Croatia, and their professor and mentor Mercedes Balbee TerMaat, Ph. D., who became the first president of HART, short of Hrvatska udruga za art terapiju (in Croatian).
Our most important mission is to be of service to persons in need, always continue to study and research, work in clinical settings and specialize, publish articles and promote art therapy as psychotherapy which uses artwork, art techniques and other expressive media to enhance the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration of an individual and/or group.
The goals of HART is to develop and promote the affirmation of Art therapy in Croatia, to contribute to the understanding and acknowledging of the profession of art therapist and of the persons we serve, to develop the confidence of the public in the profession, to contribute to the mental health of the community through the inclusion of art therapists in educational institutions, institutions of health care, and other social-oriented institutions, as well as the non-governmental/institutional form of association, or privately, by organizing art therapy programs in community, that deals with community and contributes to personal growth and development of children, youth, and adults.
At last, to be dedicated to development and promotion of highest standards of the profession of art therapy and its practice, to initiate and maintain the relationships among art therapy professionals in Croatia and the world.
