Issue 2 of the international journal Transfer – a journal for art therapy and related sciences – has been released. This second issue offers the perspective of community-based art therapy on trauma and intercultural conflict. Polarities touch one another. The destruction around us calls for the strength of creativity so that we can confront and cope with reality, and imagine and build the future.
Art therapy processes bring imagination and communication through image into an active relationship. Actively creating an image, being in the image (in the sense of an embodied or diagrammatic image) and toward the image (in the sense of transference and countertransference) releases ideas, insights, and connections across different fields of the person who expresses themselves through creativity, externalizing themselves through artistic material into the outer world. In this process, the idea as "an inner image with whose help a higher power raises us to its level" (Hamvas, 1995) touches both depths and heights rarely accessible in the dynamics of everyday life.
The idea is that we can imagine a future even in the darkest night of the soul, and that we can drive this image toward our goal. Indeed, art therapy strategies for coping with stress build strength, provide (self- and mutual) understanding, and support the finding of meaning. Yet even more precious, art therapy offers the exploration of the subconscious and, through images, of a person's consciously realized authentic inner world — enabling them not only to cope with the world around them, but to take an active role within it.
By engaging with life and taking action, we also change the instinctive responses to trauma that leave us either immobilized or hyperactivated, but in either case isolated from our surroundings, whether those surroundings are well-meaning or not.
So how can we reconnect fragmented reality into something meaningful, and how does a person with a fragmented self find their place in society? Read on to find out.

She is the director and Associate Professor of the Art Therapy Program at George Washington University, USA. She is a licensed, registered, and certified art therapist. She organizes educational programs in France, India, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and Lebanon. She also played a major role in creating Croatia's first postgraduate art therapy program. She publishes and presents on war relief, trauma, resilience, grief, ethics, and international education.
As an Art Therapy Program Director, she has received the George Washington University Outstanding Contributions Award and the Graduate Advisor Award and was selected as the 2012 GW Commencement Speaker.

Professor in the Creative Therapies Program at Syracuse University (2020-), Mount Mary University (2014 - 2020), Adjunct Instructor in the Art Therapy Graduate Program (2007 - 2014).
Her research focuses on integrating clinical and community mental health and art therapy to create an approach to care. She is the author of several scholarly publications, including a recent book co-authored with Bruce Moon, "Ethical Issues in Art Therapy."
She is the Editor-in-Chief of Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association.

akademkinja Helena Sablić Tomić je dekanica Akademije za umjetnost i kulturu u Osijeku, na Sveučilištu J. J. Strossmayera u Osijeku, gdje je utemeljen i prvi sveučilišni specijalistički studij Kreativnih terapija u Hrvatskoj.
Redovni je profesor u trajnom zvanju kolegija iz područja književnosti i kulture. Prva je ambasadorica Deska Kreativna Europa Ministarstva kulture i medija RH. Akademkinja u Razredu za književnost HAZU.
Autorica je mnogih knjiga, novinarskih tekstova i književnih kritika, te scenarija dokumentarnih filmova.
